The inspiration for this plate came from a piece I saw by one of my favorite artists Ed Heck. He does awesome dog illustrations, and his signature dog looks just like my Dora. I discovered him when I was waiting in line at a Starbucks in NYC, where some of his art just happened to be displayed. I fell in love with it, bought a print of one of his pieces, and now follow him on Facebook. He posted a picture of his piece titled 'Holding On' and I knew I had to make a plate with a similar message.
The funny thing is that later that day, when I started painting my girl (which happens to be a self portrait) with the balloon flying away in the sky, I thought I was making the same composition. I wrote the quote about letting go which went right along with the balloon being released from the girl's hand. Then, when I was done, I looked at the Ed Heck piece again and realize I had painted the exact opposite! The whole time I was thinking I was duplicating his message, but his was about holding on. I think I subconsciously knew what I was doing, because there were a few things I really needed to let go of at that time in order to be free. And it's amazing how much better I feel now that I did!
